Pengertian tentang Idiom berikut contohnya.

Idiom adalah satuan-satuan bahasa (bisa berupa kata, frase, maupun kalimat) yang maknanya tidak dapat diramalkan dari makna leksikal unsur-unsurnya maupun makna gramatikal satuan-satuan tersebut. Contoh idiom adalah membanting tulang, meja hijau dan lain sebagainya. Dari uraian di atas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa makna idiomatikal adalah makna sebuah satuan bahasa (entah kata, frase atau kalimat) yang “menyimpang” dari makna leksikal atau makna gramatikal unsur-unsur pembentuknya. Untuk mengetahui makna idiom sebuah kata (frase atau kalimat) tidak ada jalan selain mencarinya dalam kamus.

1.As easy as pie
Arti: sangat mudah
Contoh: “I thought you said this was a difficult task. In fact, it’s as easy as pie.”
2. At the eleventh hour
Arti: Pada detik-detik terakhir; hampir terlambat
Contoh: “Yes, I got the work done in time. I finished it at the eleventh hour, but I was able to submit”.
3. Be all ears
Arti: Penasaran ingin mendengar apa yang telah dikatakan orang
Contoh: “Tell me what my father said. I’m all ears.”
4. Be on the road
Arti: Sedang bepergian
Contoh: Please don’t contact me tomorrow because I’ll be on the road.
5. Beat around the bush
Arti: Menghindari sebuah isu; tidak suka ditanya-tanya
Contoh: “Quit beating around the bush. If you don’t want to go with me, just tell me!”
6. Break a leg!
Arti: semoga berhasil! (Good luck!)
Contoh: “I understand you have a job interview tomorrow. Break a leg!”
7. Burn the midnight oil
Arti: Belajar/bekerja sepanjang malam sampai subuh
Contoh: I’m not ready for the presentation tomorrow. I guess I’ll have to burn the midnight oil.”
8. Can’t make heads or tails of something
Arti: Tidak dapat mengerti sesuatu sama sekali, menganggap sesuatu membingungkan dan tidak logis.
Cntoh: “I can’t make heads or tails of your e-mail. Were you having problems with computer?”
9.An eager beaver
Arti: Orang yang selalu mau jadi relawan atau melakukan pekerjaan tambahan
Contoh: Indra is certainly an eager beaver. Any time there’s work to be done, he’s the first to say he’ll help”.
10. Get a kick out of something
Arti: Merasa lucu dengan sesuatu
Contoh: “I really get a kick out of listening to children talk.”
11. Give someone a hand
Arti: Membantu seseorang
Contoh: “I can’t do this alone. Can you give me a hand?”
12. Hit the books
Arti: Belajar
Contoh: “If you wan good scores please hit the books!”
13. Keep one’s chin up
Arti: Tetap berani dan percaya diri dalam situasi yang sulit; jangan putus asa atau khawatir terlalu banyak.
Contoh: “I know that things have been difficult for you recently, but keep your chin up. Everything will be better soon.”
14. Low blow
Arti: Kecewa berat
Contoh: He’s OK, but not good. It was a low blow for him to be laid off from his job.”
15. Make a mountain out of a molehill
Arti: Melebih-lebihkan sebuah masalah
Contoh: “Calm down. There’s really nothing to worry about. You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.”

Arti: Sama sekali tidak!

Arti: Tanggung akibat dari perbuatan sendiri

Arti: Sebuah kegiatan yang sudah direncanakan tetap akan dilaksanakan sekalipun hujan atau panas.
